Jamshedpur, Oct. 30: After Saurabh Tiwary, it could be Ishank Jaggi’s turn to wield the willow in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Good performance in domestic tournaments last season helped Jaggi to be noticed. And now, the youngster has got a call from Royal Challengers Bangalore to attend a selection trial. The 20-year-old went through the paces with the Karnataka Ranji outfit under the watchful eyes of a coach from abroad. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Let’s see how things work out in days to come,” Jaggi said, over phone from Bangalore. The right-handed batsman, who captained Jharkhand’s Under-19 team last season, added that he had been invited for the trials by former Test batsman and chief executive officer of Royal Challengers Bangalore Brijesh Patel. Jaggi has been scoring heavily in junior tournaments for quite some years now. He graduated to the senior grade when selectors drafted him in the Ranji squad. Though he did not play a single match, he got the right exposure by travelling with seniors. “Perhaps the selectors wanted to groom me. I’ve learnt a lot from sharing the dressing room with seniors who also boosted my confidence,” the steel city-based lad said. The youngster, who captained the East Zone Under-19 squad at the zonal tournament in Bangalore last season, showed his prowess with the bat in the Ranji Trophy one-day tourney. Jaggi played four matches for Jharkhand, scoring 211 runs. The form he displayed in the shorter version of Ranji Trophy earned him a slot in the East Zone squad for Deodhar Trophy. “Selection in the East Zone squad boosted my confidence by several notches. I realised that I can play big cricket. I also got an opportunity to interact with Sourav Ganguly when we were playing the Deodhar matches in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam,” Jaggi recalled. Asked whether he fancies getting selected for the IPL T20 matches next April, Jaggi said he always looks at things with a positive attitude. “I believe in destiny. God willing, I may get a chance to represent Bangalore,” he said. Jaggi’s ascent in the game has a lot to do with support of his parents, both homeopathic practitioners. “The support of parents does help. My parents have supported and guided me when it came to cricket. I still seek their advice in confusing situations,” Jaggi added.
