Array of sports events in steel city PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, Aug. 26: The steel city today witnessed a flurry of sports events in the run-up to the National Sports Day celebrations, scheduled on August 29.

While the emerging youths of Noamundi, Kalinganagar (Orissa) and West Bokaro displayed their prowess in the inter-feeder centre football, archery and athletics championships, students tried hard to outwit each other in inter-school basketball and quiz competitions.

Inauguration of a swimming centre at JRD Tata Sports Complex and an exhibition football tie between Adityapur Industrial Area Development Authority (Aiada) and Aruna Samiti were also squeezed in the tight itinerary.

Noamundi had the last laugh versus Kalinganagar in the inaugural inter-feeder centre soccer tournament at Tata Football Academy (TFA) ground. The Noamundi boys displayed some fine skills to beat their opponents 3-1.

Same was the case in the archery championship at JRD Tata Sports Complex. Emerging tribal archers from the sports feeder centres tried their best to come up with a good score. Badhu Hembrom of Kalinganagar won the individual boys’ title with a score of 682 points while Jhilli Parida, also of Kalinganagar claimed the girls’ title with 629 points.

Kalinganagar also reigned supreme in the boys’ team event, garnering 2019 points to emerge victors. West Bokaro took the title in the girls’ section with 1839 points.

The inter-feeder centre athletics meet saw Tuleshwar Bhokta of West Bokaro claim the boys’ (up to Class VIII) 100m with a timing of 12.64 seconds while his teammate Ravi Kishu finished second at 13.31 seconds. Renzo Banra of Noamundi took the third slot, clocking 13.47 seconds.

Ray Singh Hessa won in the boys’ (Class IX-XII) 100m race with a timing of 13.20 seconds, beating teammates Umesh Jerai (13.25s) and Passeng Kudada (13.47s). Shibani Mahanty of West Bokaro claimed the title in the girls’ (up to Class VIII) 100m, breasting the tape at 15.93s. Shena Singh and Harpreet Kaur, also from West Bokaro, finished second and third, respectively.

Renzo Banra of Noamundi and Harpreet Kaur of West Bokaro emerged victors in the boys’ and girls’ (up to Class VIII) 100m, respectively. Ray Singh Hessa from West Bokaro took the title in the boys’ (Class IX-XII) 800m race.

Loyola and DAV schools won the respective boys’ category matches in the inter-school basketball championship at JRD Tata Sports Complex, even as Sacred Heart Convent and St Robert’s tasted victories in the girls’ section. The finals are slated for tomorrow.

The swimming centre was inaugurated by Tata Workers’ Union president Raghunath Pandey. Twenty-five trainees (all students) have been inducted in the centre to be run under the Tata Steel sports department.

Aiada defeated Aruna Samiti 2-0 in a closely contested exhibition soccer match at Keenan Stadium, while Vikas Samad struck in the 68th minute, Shiv Shankar Sinku completed the formalities by scoring a minute later.

Harbhajan Singh, the head of Tata Steel sports department, said prize distribution ceremony would be organised on August 29 — the birthday of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.
