It is important that we refrain from engaging in mob judgment in dealing with these soldiers and Marines who come from our homes, our schools and our churches. It is estimated that 72% of the troops in Iraq favor a rapid if not immediate pull-out.

Fair start to puja shopping PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, Aug. 29: For those who have not started their Puja shopping yet, here’s a place to begin.

Traditional designs and specialised fabrics from Bengal are on display at a boutique fair at the Sabuj Kalyan Sangha in Telco. Works of around eight designers from Calcutta are being showcased at the boutique fair.

“The USP of the exhibition is the quality and design, which are not only attractive and exclusive, but buying them would also mean helping a cause — supporting the poor artisans of Bengal. Though the boutique owners have designed the garments, artisans are also involved in the process. Buying them would mean supporting their trade,” said Mani Shikha Chowdhury, the organiser of the three-day show.

Besides showcasing designs from Bengal, the aim of the exhibition is to lend credit to the hard work of the artisans as well as designers of Bengal. Designs on display include block prints, baatik, kantha stitch, patchwork and acid painting — but with a traditional touch.

Fabrics also vary from cotton and silk materials such as the Bengal taant, tussar and matka silk. Also, the kantha stitch, kundan work and kalamkaari prints are available in many patterns and colours.

All garments are priced between Rs 400 and Rs 6,000 while dress materials also start from the same range.

Customers can also choose form hand-crafted jewellery like pendants and bracelets at the fair.

“I love visiting such fairs in the city. Going to Calcutta is not always possible, but fairs like these make for some fun shopping. And with Pujas only a month away, I want to avoid the rush,” said Indrani Ghoshal, a resident of Nildih.

“I like to wear Bengali saris. Since I cannot go to Calcutta all the time, this fair has given me the opportunity to buy these saris,” said Arupa Ghosh, a resident of Bistupur.

The fair will conclude on August 31.
