Citizens voice lifeline concern

Jamshedpur, Feb. 5 (Source - The Telegraph): People from all walks of life today took to the streets and staged a dharna near Sher-e-Punjab Chowk demanding repair of the Adityapur-Kandra road which is in a bad shape.

Politicians, social workers, industrialists, trade union leaders, academics and ward commissioners of Adityapur Municipal Council gathered and decided to constitute a core committee consisting of 15 members that would meet deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto at Ranchi soon.

“Adityapur-Kandra main road is the lifeline of Adityapur and look at the pitiable condition of the stretch. We have decided to demand for its repair soon otherwise the area will become inaccessible,” said vice-president of Adityapur Municipal Council Purendra Narayan Singh, who spearheaded the dharna.

President of Singhbhum Industries Association Pramod Singh, however, claimed that the entire industrial area was suffering due to bad condition of the road.

“According to police records, last year 13 people were killed and 21 injured in 40 road accidents on this stretch. In 2008, the number of road accidents was 50 in which 36 people lost their lives,” he said.

Jan Kalyan Morcha, a social organisation, has also filed a PIL in Jharkhand High Court, which ordered action against the contractor and engineers of the road.

An activist, who was part of the agitation, said: “The state government should punish the people who were behind the low grade construction of this road.”

As per the proposal presented by road construction department of Seraikela-Kharsawan before the state, the Tata-Kandra road can be rebuild with a fund of Rs 17 crore.
