Jamshedpur, Oct. 30: After Saurabh Tiwary, it could be Ishank Jaggi’s turn to wield the willow in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Good performance in domestic tournaments last season helped Jaggi to be noticed. And now, the youngster has got a call from Royal Challengers Bangalore to attend a selection trial. The 20-year-old went through the paces with the Karnataka Ranji outfit under the watchful eyes of a coach from abroad. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Let’s see how things work out in days to come,” Jaggi said, over phone from Bangalore. The right-handed batsman, who captained Jharkhand’s Under-19 team last season, added that he had been invited for the trials by former Test batsman and chief executive officer of Royal Challengers Bangalore Brijesh Patel.

Theatre treat on cards in steel city |
Jamshedpur, Oct. 30: Theatre lovers of the steel city have reasons to cheer. Celluloid Chapter would host a two-day theatre festival from December 5. To be organised at Rabindra Bhavan, the festival aims at reviving the dying art form in the city. Two theatre groups from Calcutta — Nandikar and Gandhar — would stage one play on both the days. On being asked why a organisation like Celluloid Chapter which works for the promotion of cinema in the steel city thought of organising the theatre festival the secretary of the body Debashis Chakraborty said it is to revive the glory days of theatre. “Theatre is the base of cinema and both the art are inter-related. We promote good cinema and that will also happen if theatre as art form does not become a thing of the past. Our aim is to make people aware about theatre as we have done about cinema. To understand cinema better, one needs to know about theatre also,” said Chakraborty.

Jamshedpur, Oct. 30: The steel city’s real estate market may be bravely holding on to prices amid a global economic slowdown, but registration of new properties has shown a decline, leaving government officials worried about meeting annual revenue targets. Registration of flats has come down by almost 30 per cent, compared to last year. According to officials in the land registration department, 1,750 flats were registered till September last year, but the department has logged only 1,225 registrations so far this year. But there is no sign of a reduction in the price of land or flats in Jamshedpur or neighbouring Adityapur in Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Builders claimed paucity of land in and around the city has helped them retain prices even though there are very few buyers now.

Soren govt to prod Centre against hate crimes |
Jamshedpur, Oct. 29: The Jharkhand government is extremely agitated at the ongoing hate campaign against north Indians in Maharashtra and is seriously considering raising the issue with the Centre, all the while supporting the demand for a CBI probe on the manner in which Rahul Raj was killed in an “encounter”. Condemning the incidents of violence against north Indians in Mumbai at the behest of Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, deputy chief minister Sudhir Mahto said the government would try and evolve a political consensus on the issue and added that chief minister Shibu Soren was also in support of the move. Alleging that Raj Thackeray’s political agenda, if allowed to spread, had the dangerous potential of “breaking up” the country, Mahto said, “I appreciate the way in which Bihar leaders shared a common platform for raising their voice against the attacks on north Indians.” Mahto’s assertion comes on the day when the Maharashtra government was desperately trying to defend its abysmal record of last week by asserting that yesterday’s death of labourer from Uttar Pradesh as a result of his assault on a local train, allegedly by a group of Marathis, was not a hate crime.
