Teenager bags 1-lakh prize PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, April 24: Eight confident answers and 12 correct guesses were all that it took young Nirvika Ahuja to win Rs 1 lakh, sitting right at home.

A Class VII student of Loyola School, Nirvika managed to win the prize through an interactive game show run by a national cable network provider recently. Won by one person across the country every week, Nirvika quite accidentally chanced upon the game show while casually browsing through the channels one evening while her parents were away from home.

Luck favoured her as she got a subject of her choice too: movies. A set of 20 questions to which answers had to be provided randomly one after the other, every correct response from her earned her the next question in the series. “Had it been any other subject, I would have flopped miserably,” said Nirvika candidly. Titled Lakhpati Kaun, it is a show designed for all.

Jamshedpur, April 24: Concerned over the constant rise in mercury, which has already claimed one life in Patamda, the East Singhbhum district administration is considering early vacations for city schools.

Summer vacation in city schools is usually declared on or after May 9. But with the mercury touching 43°C, the administration is drawing up a circular to direct school authorities to declare holidays from May 1.

Ruling out the possibility of rain, the Met department on the other hand warned of maximum temperature reaching 45°C.

The steel city today recorded the highest temperature of the season — 42.9°C — three degrees above normal. The minimum temperature recorded was 25.6°C — two degrees more than normal.

Deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum Nitin Madan Kulkarni said: “The maximum temperature during this time of the season in the city is comparatively higher than in previous years. Keeping in mind the health of students, an early summer vacation would be a wise decision.” He added that the district collectorate was closely monitoring the temperature.

Jamshedpur, April 23: Starting today, citizens would be given suggestions on road safety norms for the next seven days.

A joint initiative of Safety Awareness for All (SAFE) Club of Tata Steel and the district administration, the Safety Awareness Week was declared formally open at JRD Tata Sports Complex this morning.

Almost 500 students from 50 schools participated in the inaugural programme, putting around 33 models on display. Not only were the students enthusiastic, the guests too showed an eager interest in discussing ideas with the youngsters.

“The ideas turned out to be quite interesting. We never thought that young people such as these have the potential to come up with such innovative ideas,” said N.M. Kulkarni, the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum, who was the chief guest on the occasion.

Participation of children in the programme indicated a high awareness level towards road safety.

 
Snags paralyse mobile users PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, April 23: A complete collapse of two leading mobile networks in the city for over 24 hours saw subscribers facing a harrowing time.

While lines of Reliance Telecom developed snags on Tuesday evening, BSNL lines began facing severe complications since early this morning.

Officials at Reliance, requesting anonymity, today said: “A major fault occurred last afternoon when the optical fibre cable along National Highway 33 got severely damaged. That led to a complete collapse in the mobile network connectivity in the city and its adjoining areas.”

“Engineers from both Jamshedpur and Ranchi were later pressed into service to rectify the fault, but till late this evening, partial services were restored, but majority of the mobile numbers remained out of reach. It is a serious problem and our engineers are trying their best to solve it. In all possibility, we would be able to restore normal services by late tonight,” said officials.

Jamshedpur, April 23: Tridibesh Mukherjee, the Tata Steel group director of integration and development, is set to join an elite club that includes JRD Tata. For, he would be awarded the 2008 Bessemer Gold Medal by Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IMMM), UK, on July 2 in London for his contribution to the steel industry.

IMMM promotes and develops all aspects of materials science, engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy.

Mukherjee, who was the former deputy managing director (steel) of Tata Steel, would deliver the Bessemer lecture after receiving the award.

“Among the awards which recognise the achievements of people in the steel industry, Bessemer Gold Medal is the most prestigious and is given to acknowledge outstanding contributions of a person to the steel industry,” said a Tata Steel spokesperson.

Mukherjee could not be contacted for his comments.
