Zoo makeover for animal safety |

Jamshedpur, June 27: The recent escape of four gharials into the Subernarekha has prompted change in address of some inmates of the Tata Steel Zoological Park. The zoo authorities have not only decided to shift the crocodile enclosure in the park to a new place, but have also decided to increase the height of the leopard nursery from eight to 14 feet. A decision to this effect was taken in an especially convened meeting of Tata Steel Zoological Society today. Attended by district wildlife warden A.T. Mishra and Tata Steel Zoological Society president Sanjeev Paul, the meeting was aimed at bringing about corrective measures in safeguarding the wild animals and reptiles from natural calamities, including floods.

Jamshedpur, June 27: Little did Piuli Konar and Deepshekhar Mukherjee realise that they would be creating history when they joined International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) two years ago. Both have become the institute’s first two students to be recruited by Tommy Hilfiger (Arvind Murjani Brands) — one of the widely recognised names in the fashion industry. Tommy Hilfiger offers a broad array of products including apparel, accessories, footwear, fragrance and eyewear. Centre head of INIFD Rashmi Chopra said here today that the selected students would get the designation of customer relation officer with a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, including perks. The students would be posted at Chandigarh. “We are happy that the students were selected during the campus interviews. Seven of our students were shortlisted by United Colors of Benetton,” she said.

Three die in freak accidents |

Jamshedpur, June 27: Three persons were killed and several others injured in separate road mishaps and of electrocution in and around the steel city in the past 24 hours. Tileswar Yadav, a resident of Kashidih, was killed as lightning struck him at Gamharia this evening. Yadav, who was the driver of a Tata 407, had alighted from his vehicle and was standing under a tree when lightning struck. The cleaner of the vehicle had also come in contact with the lightning bolt but he escaped with minor burn injuries.A teenager, Seikh Ahmed, was also electrocuted at Kapali under Chandil police station area this evening. Police sources said Ahmed, a resident of Kapali panchayat, had gone out for relieving himself in the field and came in contact with a live electric wire that fell on him. Before he could jump away, the youth fell down and died. Sources said as the live wire fell, a thatched cottage was burnt and two goats were killed.

Cycling medal hope hinges on outsiders |

Jamshedpur, June 27: Jharkhand’s dreams of bagging several medals in cycling at the 34th National Games are looking more realistic. Four top cyclists in the country have agreed to represent Jharkhand at the Games, expected to begin on December 1. The cyclists have informed Jharkhand Cycling Association, which has asked the sportspersons to obtain NOCs from their respective employers and home state. Three of the cyclists are employed with the Indian Railways — Harprit Singh Mohi (Punjab), Rajinder Bishnoi (Rajasthan) and Beena Devi (Manipur). The fourth is P. Anita Kumari from Manipur, who is settled in Assam.

Tata Steel plans to put up a cold rolling mill at Jamshedpur |

June 26, Jamshedpur : Domestic steel major Tata Steel today said it plans to set up a 1.5-million tonne cold rolling mill at Jamshedpur at an estimated investment of Rs 3,000 crore.
"We have plans to do that... The Board approval is awaited," Tata Steel Chief Operating Officer H M Nerulkar said here.
The cold rolling mill would come up at its existing location in Jamshedpur, where the company plans to increase its installed steel making capacity to 10 million tons by 2011 from five million tonne last year.
The existing cold rolling mill of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur has a capacity of 1.5 million tonne as well.
Company Managing Director B Muthuraman said that Tata Steel's long-term strategy includes increasing production capacity to 50 million tonnes by 2015.
The company plans to have a strong base in India, acquire overseas growing and mature markets, ownership of strategic raw materials and primary steel making facility in countries rich in iron ore and coal or gas.
