Women’s college on Wi-Fi way PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, Oct. 29: Soon the students of Jamshedpur Women’s College would be seen entering the premises with laptops in hand.

No, the college is not gifting laptops to students but the institute is going the Wi-Fi way.

From January the college premises would be a Wi-Fi enabled zone.

Jamshedpur Women’s College will be the first constituent college of Ranchi University to make use of the technology. Only two other institutes in the state — BIT Mesra and XLRI School of Business and Human Resources — are Wi-Fi enabled.

“The concept was lingering in our minds for quite sometime now but we decided to install it when MBA course starts in the college. Students need something to stay in the college. This is an stimulus for the students to stay in the college that will also help in higher attendance,” said Shukla Mohanty, the principal of Jamshedpur Women’s College.

The campus with about 5.5 acres of land will be fully equipped with access points so that students and teachers can have access to free internet anywhere in the college.

Although the departments are equipped with computers and Internet, Wi-Fi will enable them to unlimited access of Internet which the authorities believe would help them in research and case studies.

“Not only the students but teachers also need to access Internet while teaching students. Being one of the renowned colleges in the state, we cannot stick to old methods of teaching. Students of my college should like to come here and should stay back late. This will act as a stimuli,” said Mohanty.

The measurement work for installation of Wi-Fi has just begun in the college.

The principal said that work will be completed this year and Wi-Fi will be functional from January. The college has also got the approval from Ranchi University. The zone will be fully secured and inscriptions will also be installed to prevent mishaps.

“It is a good move on the part of the college so we gave the go ahead. We want all the colleges to be equipped with the latest gadgets and infrastructure,” said S.S. Akhtar, the spokesperson of the university.

“If we had to research on something, we had to wait till the class is over now we can do it in class itself. There is no need to leave the research work for home which would be presented before the teachers the next day. This will be of great help especially in subjects like economics, where market trends play a significant role in teaching,” said Shaheen Razi, the professor of economics at the college.

It has come as a pleasant surprise to the students. They can bring their laptops to college, discuss problems with teachers and classmates, research on topics and expand their knowledge in college itself.

“Now we do not have to wait to go back home to work on our laptops. We can simply bring it to college and study with other classmates. It is like a Diwali gift from the college authorities. We can now discuss things we have come across on the Internet with our teachers like any private institute and get their feedback,” said Ritu Sharma, an MBA student of the college.

  • Jaspal Sing : I join Dr. Mohan Kumar to encourage our very own Rajdeep with votes for winning Indian Idol. Not that an artiste with his kind of excellent talent needs the 'tag' of 'Idol', since he is already acclaimed to be the best participant and is sure to go on to achieve his dreams in the world of music- still, he deserves all kudos for perseverance. And he should not be made to feel 'deprived' owing to our 'apathy'. So, people, sms ur votes for RAJDEEP to 52525 every Friday 9PM !
