Jamshedpur, April 8: Schoolteachers giving tuition to students may now lose their jobs, according to a recent directive issued by Loyola School. In a recent move, the principal of the school, Fr Victor Misquith, has given an ultimatum to all teachers saying they should stop giving private tuition with immediate effect failing which they might have to face serious consequences. “We have told all teachers, both at the primary and high school level, that they should stop giving tuition to students of the same classes they teach. If we come across any such instance, the teachers concerned would have to lose their job,” said the principal. On why the school is incorporating such a strict measure for the first time, the principal said disciplinary action was needed keeping in mind the constant complaints from students and parents. Most teachers at the school who offer private tuition, however, refused to comment on the matter. “Yes we are aware of the rule, but we are not really in a position to answer,” said a senior teacher who has been conducting private classes for many years now. “If the school sticks to its directive of punishing teachers, we would have no option but to stop giving tuition,” said another senior science teacher, who takes private classes at his residence. The fear among teachers notwithstanding, students are amused by the school’s move. “Honestly, nothing would change. Barring one or two teachers, all others offer tuition. If the school starts rusticating teachers at this rate, we would be left with no teachers,” said a Class IX student. Several students also expressed ignorance about the move. “We don’t know of such rulings. How can we stop going for tuition unless our teachers inform us of the ruling?” said Akash Tiwari, a Loyola student. Parents, on the other hand, are impressed with the move. “Hopefully, at last the harassment and menace would stop. I was fed up of suggestions from teachers at Loyola that my son requires guidance. They kept on giving poor scores to him until he took tuition. The moment I enrolled him into one, his marks shot over 80 per cent,” said a leading city doctor. He also alleged that his son was refused admission in Plus Two as he did not attend the private classes offered by his teachers. Loyola authorities have also issued a directive to all students that if they remain absent for three consecutive days without notice, their names would be removed from the attendance register. “No student would be allowed to miss classes for three days or more without notice. If they are found doing so, they will have to face rustication and seek re-admission in the same class,” added Misquith. Apart from this, the school has also prohibited its Class XI students from bringing two-wheelers to school. All parents have been issued circulars in this regard. “This has been done keeping in mind the safety aspect,” said the principal. Students till Class 10 were debarred from bringing motorbikes to school. The school has also decided to give weightage to students who excel in sports and other extra-curricular activities.
