Jamshedpur, May 29: Mathematics lived up to its reputation of being the horror for students at this year’s CBSE Class X exams.

As the results were announced today, school principals blamed the lengthy paper for having affected grades.

“The average marks per student in mathematics is 66.55 per cent, which is not very good, considering it is a high scoring subject,” said S.P. Sharma, the principal of DAV Public School.

Out of 160 students who had appeared for the examination from this school, 159 passed with ease while mathematics proved to be the bane for the other.

But M. Dastagiri Reddy will vehemently deny that mathematics was the horror this year. For, he scored 100 per cent in the subject and emerged as Jamshedpur’s top scorer this year with a whopping 97.6 per cent.

The student of Jamshedpur Public School, who is already making plans to realise his dreams of becoming an engineer, credits his success to hard work and grit.

More good news is in store for Dastagiri.

A news channel reported that 96 per cent was the third highest score in the country, and Dastagiri, with his 97.6 per cent, is ready to challenge them.

Atul Jha of DAV Public School in Bistupur with 96 per cent marks was the second city topper. “My mother had high hopes and I am happy to have lived up to her expectations,” said an elated Atul, adding that he had expected to get somewhere close to 98 per cent.

Abhishek Anand of the same school was the third highest scorer in Jamshedpur with 95.6 per cent.

The second topper at Jamshedpur Public School was Lilly Kumari, who scored 95.4 per cent.

The school has done particularly well this year with 17 students having scored above 90 per cent. The school obtained cent per cent results with all its 156 students clearing the examination.

“Had it not been for mathematics, the average results could have been better,” said Shubhendu Majumdar, the teachers’ representative of Jamshedpur Public School.

At St Mary’s High School, mathematics pulled down two students from the pass mark. Mohammad Aftab Iqbal with 93.2 per cent and Ambati Venkatesh with 91.8 per cent were the high scorers here.

At DAV Public School, NIT, Sharmistha Chowdhury and Navnita — at 95.2 per cent each — bagged the maximum marks in the school.

Delhi Public School, Mango, also had good results with Ankur grabbing 93 per cent and Bhargav Jha following at 92.2 per cent.

“Our overall results are improving,” said Dhananjay Pan, the principal.

The school had cent per cent results.

Students of Valley View School were not too far behind. Ninety-five students wrote the exam from here and 71 cleared with first division.
