Low pressure washes away five-year rain record PDF Print E-mail

Jamshedpur, July 6: According to the meteorological department records, the rainfall in the state till now has already surpassed five year’s record.

Till now the state has received 755mm rainfall. Records available with the Patna Met office revealed that till July 5 last year, the state had recorded 430mm rainfall while in 2006, 375mm rains were recorded. The average rainfall is about 1,200mm.

“The reason for heavy rains was the active monsoon this year. The monsoon arrived in the state on June 10. Since then, the monsoon trough has been hovering over the state. But in the previous years, the situation was different,” said T.N. Jha, the director of Patna Met office.

“We find no signs of a shift of the monsoon trough from the state. Satellite pictures show favourable conditions for rains due to the active monsoon. The low pressure, arising from Bay of Bengal, is resulting in more rains,” he said.

The Met office, in its 24-hour forecast, has predicted intermittent rains in most parts of the state.

“If such a situation prevails, the rainfall is expected to reach the average figure by August this year,” said a weather analyst at Patna Met office.

Apart from the steel city, several other parts of the state, including Daltongunj, Hazaribagh and Koderma, are experiencing continuous rains for the past few days.

The local weather office recorded a rainfall of 28mm in the past 48 hours while rainfall recorded in Daltongunj and Koderma crossed the 30mm mark.

Meanwhile, the regional meteorological centre at Alipore in Bengal has predicted that this year the rainfall in Jharkhand is expected to cross 1,400mm.

“Though it is too early to comment on the total rainfall this monsoon (June to September), keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions, we can safely predict that the rainfall would cross the 1,400mm mark,” said G.C. Debnath, the director of Alipore Met centre.
