Jamshedpur, July 23:Judge saheb, mujhe nyay nahi milla (Honourable judge, I did not get justice).”

These were the last words heard by eyewitnesses before they were shocked to see a woman jumping from a second floor room on the civil court premises this afternoon.

Perturbed by repeated denials by her husband that she had not been married to him, Baby Saroj, 22, jumped — only to be saved by miracle — while a counselling session was still on in the family court in the court complex near Mango around 3pm.

After being obstructed by a rod protruding out of the building where her sari was blocked for a while, she fell with a thud on the cemented floor. By the time she was rescued, she had lost her consciousness. Her front row of teeth was smashed with ruptured chin and fractured legs.

A resident of Nayaline in Sonari, Baby was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where doctors, after preliminary report, said she did not sustain any internal brain injury. But an hour after the fall, she began to bleed from her ears, something that may be a cause of concern, one of the attending doctors said.

Kanchan Devi, her mother, said she was at the courtroom with Baby’s husband Arjun Prasad at the court. Arjun sneaked out of the court after the incident.

Kanchan said that Arjun , once their next-door neighbour, “abducted” her daughter on March 15, 2007. “Having abducted Baby, Arjun went to Noida where they started living as husband and wife but without marriage. After nine months, Arjun went to Raipur where they married in an Arya temple on September 22.”

Kanchan said as she had lodged an FIR with Sonari police station against Arjun, the couple returned to the steel city and surrendered before the police. “As they were already married, we withdrew the case. Soon after, Arjun took my daughter to Durg. The day after they arrived at Durg, Arjun went out of the hotel on the pretext of seeking job, but did not return. Baby smelt something wrong in the affair and intimated us. We went to Durg and brought her along this January,” she said.

Returning here, they went to Arjun’s parents to press them to accept Baby. “After Sonari police refused to accept our complaint that Arjun’s family was denying Baby’s rights as his wife, we filed a complaint against Arjun with the court of chief judicial magistrate in February, leading it to register a case under Section 498A,” she said.

“Baby and Arjun were summoned to the family court for counselling today. The judge tried to persuade Arjun to take his wife home, but he continued to shout that Baby was not his wife,” she said.

Rajiv Kumar Singh the officer-on-duty at the court said a hunt was on to track Arjun.
