Jamshedpur, Nov. 22: After almost a fortnight, roads linking to the Kharkai Road bridge has once again become accident prone. A NGO, Jan Kalyan Morcha called off the agitation following an assurance from the chief minister for a second bridge to be constructed parallel to the existing bridge on river Kharkai. Situation at the Adityapur-Kandra Road, Kharkai Link Road and General Office Road, is again back to square one with several accidents taking place in the recent past. Due to movement of innumerable heavy vehicles on the Kharkai Road bridge, the roads leading to the bridge have become congested and dangerous. The situation worsens when the heavy vehicles start plying on the bridge. During the past couple of days, three road mishaps, including a fatal one occurred on Kharkai Link Road in Bistupur and Adityapur-Kandra Road. And all three accidents took place once the no-entry timing got over. At about 11pm on Tuesday, a Scorpio had a head-on collision with a speeding truck near Gopal Maidan, on Kharkai Link Road. Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle escaped with minor injuries, although the Scorpio was badly damaged. When Jan Kalyan Morcha had launched its agitation for the second bridge over the Kharkai from October 31the NGO had prevented the vehicles weighing more than 18 tonnes from commuting over the Kharkai bridge. As a result there was not a single mishap on that stretch. When asked, the district transport officer, Shivendu Kumar Singh refused to comment on the matter.
