Jamshedpur, May 18: Now that the matriculation results are out, it is time for students to go around different colleges across the city seeking admission to streams of their choices and choosing subject combinations. And a better overall result in the state board examination has ensured that the colleges have raised their cut-off marks for admission to ensure that they get the crème de la crème for their institute. A high cut-off percentage of 75 has been set for admission into the science stream in some colleges, while 45 per cent marks has been sought in the arts stream at lesser known colleges. Unable to decide on the expected trend, the colleges have decided to go ahead with the already sanctioned number of seats in all three streams as of now. But depending on the response, more seats might be added later. At Jamshedpur Women’s College, forms for admission to the Intermediate course will be distributed from May 19. With the college offering 640 seats in each of the three streams, students who have secured 60 per cent marks are eligible for direct admission. At Graduate School College for Women, admission forms would be given out to students from May 20. With 640 seats in both the commerce and arts streams, science aspirants have a tough chance with the total number of seats being a modest 512. While the cut-off has been decided at 65 per cent for the science students, for the commerce aspirants, the number stands at 60 per cent with arts following it closely at 55 per cent. Karim City College, however, has fewer seats to offer for students opting for the arts stream. With just 384 seats to enrol for, the commerce streams and science students have a better option with 640 available seats. “There is a huge demand for seats in the science stream. Therefore, we decided on this number, but the other two disciplines see fewer students applying for admission, particularly the arts stream,” said Muhammad Zakaria, the principal of Karim City College. At his college, the science aspirants have to look at 75 per cent marks for a direct entry, while for the arts and commerce section, the cut-off stand at 45 and 55 percentage respectively, the latter figure being five per cent higher than that of last year’s cut-off in the commerce stream. Forms are already being distributed since May 15 and would go on for some time. At Jamshedpur Co-operative College, each of arts, commerce and science streams have 640 seats, direct admission to which will be through cut-off marks of 60, 60 and 70 per cent respectively. With forms being given out from May 21, the college authorities are contemplating of asking for an extra section in whichever stream the demand is more. “Keeping the response uppermost in mind, we will ask for an extra section that would mean an increase of 128 seats at a time,” explain- ed A.N. Ojha, the principal of Jamshedpur Co-operative College. Students seeking admission to Jamshedpur Workers’ College have to submit a self-addressed envelope along with the admission form. This, the college authorities said, would help them in keeping a check on the student’s attendance from the very beginning. It would help them to report to the parent in case of low attendance figures. Forms here would be given out from May 25. The commerce and arts streams here have 640 seats, but the number of seats for the science stream stands at a modest 512. Sixty-five per cent is the decided cut-off marks for the commerce and science streams with 60 per cent being the chosen cut-off for the arts discipline.
