Jamshedpur, April 2: After stalwarts from Calcutta enthralled the audience during the recently concluded Natya Utsav, it is now the turn of amateur theatre artistes from the city to exhibit their talents. The three-day-long Natyotsav organised by Jamshedpur Theatre Association (JTA) in association with the Milanee has once again brought with it a wide range of plays in Hindi and Bengali. They are being staged at Milanee auditorium. “This is the fifth year that JTA is organising the multilingual drama festival in the city. An annual event, the Natyotsav serves as the right platform for theatre enthusiasts from the city to show their skills,” said Gautam Shankar, an executive member of JTA. A total of six plays are lined up during the coming days. Directed by Mohammad Nizam, a city-based theatre personality, the programme started with the staging of the Hindi drama Papa. A team of 18 members delivered the gross reality of modern life. Based on today’s hardcore competitive environment the play delved deep into the emotions of audience present there. Like the name Papa, the drama shed light on the influence of Western culture. The story started with the death of a person, whose sons had no time to take part in his funeral ceremony. “We have tried to deliver a message to people through this play — they must not lose respect for Indian culture and traditions on the pretext of modernity,” said Nizam. However, one of the team members met with severe accident on her way to the venue. But the sudden mishap not withstanding, the cast and crew did not for a minute make it obvious and the show went on perfectly. “The rule of entertainment says that the show must go on. Then how could we have not followed it,” said one of the actors. After this it was the turn of a Bengali drama Hite Biparit, which was staged by a local artistes’ group from Sakchi. On Thursday, a Hindi play titled Gold Card would be staged by the students of DBMS School. The other groups performing in the fest are Taj, Prajna Bharti and Nishan.
