Jamshedpur, Feb. 22: Rash drivers and eve-teasers beware. East Singhbhum police would soon induct flying squads into its traffic wing to check these problems. From March, policemen on special motorbikes would be posted at strategic areas around Jamshedpur. They would respond to curb these menaces. East Singhbhum superintendent of police Naveen Kumar Singh said the department has requisitioned 20 motorbikes and as many state-of-the-art communication gadgets to equip the flying squad members. Three flying squads would start functioning on a trial basis first. “The flying squads would comprise three trained traffic constables and an assistant sub-inspector. About 12 traffic police personnel would assist the flying squad by staying at strategic locations and responding to call for backup,” said Singh. “The squads will be equipped with fast-moving motorbikes and communication gadgets such as wireless sets. They would also be armed with sophisticated firearms,” he said. The superintendent of police said the squads would monitor areas under Sakchi, Bistupur and Golmuri police stations. Depending on the availability of manpower, the service would be extended to other parts of the city. He pointed out that the flying squads would remain ready at their respective police station areas. The squad would start moving only after getting information over the wireless about someone driving at break-neck speeds. Then the chase would begin and the vehicle would be intercepted. “Having intercepted the vehicle, the flying squad will take the driver of the vehicle into custody and prosecute him,” the superintendent of police said, unless the driver in question was responding to an emergency. The senior police officer said it has been observed that rash driving is responsible for all road mishaps, fatal or non-fatal. “If rash driving is taken to task, road mishaps could well be brought under control,” he pointed out. The flying squads would be held accountable if major mishaps were reported from their jurisdiction, the East Singhbhum police chief said. Another area the flying squads would target is eve teasing. It is a common sight in the steel city to see motorcycle-borne youths roaming around near women’s colleges or marketplaces in Bistupur and Sakchi and indulging in eve-teasing, said the officer. The district police have not done anything to curb the menace, he said. “But once the flying squad is introduced, the personnel would be trained to handle these Romeos,” said the police superintendent.
