Bengalis in Jamshedpur adds the touch of culture through their various cultural activities and events. The cultural activities of the Bengal Club Center round the projection of the Indian classical music, dance, dramas. Every year it propagates Rabindra Culture through a Mela, which is normally held in the month of July. Reputed artists from different parts of the country participate to prove the dignity of the performances. To encourage the young talents the Bengal Club holds annual sit and draw, competitions of song, dance and recitation. These competitions not only encourage the students but also bring out new talents in the respective field. The Bengal Club serves as a beacon of the Indian Culture in Jamshedpur.
The late Soumendranath Tagore in Jamshedpur mooted the idea of building a permanent memorial to Rabindranath Tagore in this city on the 19th February 1961. The Rabindranath Centenary Celebration Committee, later the Tagore Society was formed. At the request of Sir Jehangir Gandhy, the Committee’s patron-in-chief Dr.Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan graciously consected to lay the foundation stone of ‘Jamshedpur Rabindranath Bhavan’. Over 1 acre of the land was allotted free of cost by the Company. Subsequently 3 more plots were allotted covering a total area of 2.52 acres at one of the most architectural and centrally located spots over-looking the Jubilee Park.
Dr. Shantiram Chakraborty established the Milanee Hall in 1915. The Milanee is an ample truth in this regard what was a receding dream and a modest endeavor to begin with, stands today. Half a century later as the pioneering institution of its kind in this Steel City, providing the forum for cultural and recreation amenities for one and all. What it is today is the result of years of concerted and untiring efforts of many with determination and broad imagination behind them. In its pursuit of a great cultural heritage it was conceived that performing arts could survive only by devotion and dedication of true artists.
